The first gold record was made by AT&T - not to honor a half-million seller but to improve the sound of music. AT&T scientists discovered that surface noise on records could be greatly reduced if a thin layer of gold was sputtered on the wax master. This made the surface smoother - and less noisy. Gold master records were first used for motion picture and broadcast sound recordings and, after World War II, for phonograph records. |
